Most corporate, association and government videos focus on talking heads. The camera never moves and the audience is left watching people talking over graphics that may or may not be animated. There is little to no action or excitement to draw the audience in to the shot and give them a reason to care.

Video Solutions prefers to do things a little differently. We like to use cinematic techniques to make the footage come to life. Whenever possible, we recommend bringing action into the B-Roll or cover footage, and even those standard interviews.

Have you ever heard a video where it sounded like the audio was coming through a tin can? Or does it sound like the person was recorded in a Conference Room or bowling alley—full of echoes and shallow sounding? Or is the person speaking out of sync with the voice track? What about videos where the sound levels are uneven, sometimes quiet and then suddenly loud?

Good audio matters. It finishes the piece and determines whether your organization comes off looking professional or like a badly dubbed film from the 1970s.

Luckily there are ways to avoid the “Godzilla” effect. Here are our top five ways to capture quality audio:

1. Use an external microphone (or hard mic), not the one in the camera. This is crucial. Many small companies do not include an audio package in their production budget and it shows in the final product. The camera mic creates a boomy echoey effect and really differentiates an amateur recording from a professional one.
